May 10, 1869: The transcontinental railroad is completed at Promontory, Utah
February 24, 1870: First African-American in Congress, Hiram Revels, is sworn into office
March 30, 1870: The Fifteenth Amendment (suffrage to African-Americans) goes into effect
July 15, 1870: Georgia readmitted to the Union, ending the Confederate States of America
October 8, 1871: The Great Chicago Fire starts
March 1, 1872: Yellowstone National Park is established as the world's first national park
March 1, 1875: The Civil Rights Act is passed, giving African Americans equal rights to jury duty and accommodation
January 31, 1876: United States government orders Native Americans onto reservations
