August 18, 1920: The Nineteenth Amendment goes into effect, giving women the right to vote
March 4, 1921: Warren G. Harding sworn in as President
May 30, 1922: The Lincoln Memorial is dedicated
August 2, 1923: President Harding dies; Calvin Coolidge sworn in as President
March 4, 1925: President Coolidge begins his second term
May 20, 1927: Charles Lindbergh begins the first nonstop transatlantic flight
November 18, 1928: Mickey Mouse appears in Steamboat Willie
March 4, 1929: Herbert Hoover sworn in as President
October 29, 1929: The Stock Market Crash drops the United States into the Great Depression

March 4, 1933: Franklin D. Roosevelt is sworn in as President
March 9, 1933: Congress begins passing legislation to support President Roosevelt's New Deal programs
March 31, 1933: The Civilian Conservation Corps begins putting people to work
January 20, 1937: President Roosevelt begins his second term 
September 5, 1939: The United States declares neutrality in what will become World War II

January 20, 1941: President Roosevelt begins his third term
December 7, 1941: The United States is attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbor
December 8, 1941: The United States declares war on Japan
December 11, 1941: The United States declares war on Germany and Italy
June 6, 1944: The Normandy invasion (D-Day) occurs
February 4, 1945: The Big Three meet in Yalta
April 22, 1945: President Roosevelt dies; Harry S. Truman sworn in as President
May 7, 1945: Germany surrenders, ending the war in Europe
August 15, 1945: Japan surrenders, ending the war in the Pacific

January 20, 1949: President Truman begins his second term

The United Nations was established in 1945 to promote peace, but a Cold War was beginning between democratic and communistic nations. The Cold War would last approximately from 1946 until 1991.
