1. Introduction to graphing

There are many biotic factors in this ecosystem, providing scientists with LOTS of research possibilities. Local scientist, Courtney Gerstenmaier has been researching amphipods in a mudflat. Explore and interpret her real data in this introductory graphing lesson!

2. One drop at a time... let's read a rain gauge!

Oscar, Hank and Hannah become part of a hurricane. What are some effects of these storms? Hurricanes can bring high volumes of rain to an area. Scientists use rain gauges to measure how much it rains. Let’s practice!

3. Feeding fractions

Some scientists study plants and animals and their place in the food chain. Alyssa Demko from the College of Charleston is one of them.  She studies what sea urchins and Emerald crabs like to eat and how much they eat. When Alyssa wants to count how much Emerald crabs eat, she uses fractions! Practice quantifying how much algae an Emerald Crab has eaten in this Feeding Fractions worksheet!

4. Connecting the food chain

What is one way that plants and animals are connected? Determine the “links” between the following animals in this Connecting the Food Chain worksheet.

5. Human solutions to invasive species: the grass carp

Grass carps are used to control an invasive weedy plant that has been taking over Lake Murray. This invasive plant was released into the lake accidentally, and now it is taking over. They compete with native plants for space and sunlight, and use up an enormous amount of oxygen. Humans have worked on the problem by introducing the grass carp into the lake.
