(Riverine Pharmaceutical Assessment, Collection, Education) project. The goal of RiverPACE is to promote awareness of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs). PPCPs are the medicines you take, the soaps you use, and the make-up you wear. Our water samples from Charleston Harbor will be sent to scientists to analyze. Our samples will help scientists better understand how these trace amounts of pharmaceuticals affect aquatic ecosystems and their biotic components. Clams are found readily on coastal South Carolina mudflats. They are soft-bodied animals that produce their own hard shell for protection. They are attached to their shell and it is a part of their bodies! Clams are consumers- they must eat food to survive! Clams filter feed on plankton and bacteria. An incurrent siphon pumps water into their bodies where they process tiny bits of organic matter. They can filter up to 1 gallon/hour! (uri.edu) Another siphon (excurrent siphon) then pumps the water back out! Clams are the favored prey of whelks. A whelk is a type of salt water snail. If whelks prey on clams, what does that make the whelk?
We are excited to be a part of RiverPace this year! The week of October 20th we will collect water samples that will be tested for a variety of human-introduced chemicals. Stay tuned for pictures and in the near future… the results! Discuss with your classmates and friends: "why are chemicals in our aquatic ecosystems a concern?” Britton's Neck Elementary School received their Blended Learning story books!
Check out this email we received: "The students and teachers were SO excited to receive their 2 books: "Oscar I AM!" and "Harry, I WAS!?" Their teachers and I showed them the website and the online e-books, too! We are so thankful to you for giving us this opportunity to incorporate the 5th grade Blended Learning Initiative Grant Package here at Britton's Neck Elementary School. I'm attaching some pictures from this morning- when the students received their books. There's a race on to see if the students can beat their teachers in reading the books over our Fall Break- which runs from tomorrow through next Monday! Again, thanks from the bottom of our hearts. I know our children will grow so much from utilizing the resources." - Cindy Jones, Instructional Technology Patriots Point presented at this year's STEM Education Summit in Spartanburg, SC. Our education and technical staff, Hannah, Alicia, and Gene, showcased our latest technology integrated in the classroom! |
