"Plane" History

Wright Brothers' Flyer- on December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers forever changed human history with the first successful flight of a heavier than air machine.  The first flight lasted only 12 seconds with a distance of 120 feet.​

SBD Dauntless Douglas was the Navy's prize dive bomber in the early years of World War II.  During the Battle of Midway, these dive bombers would sink four Japanese aircraft carriers and heavily damage two enemy cruisers.  In spite of a less than flattering nickname for the SBD (slow but deadly), the Dauntless was considered one of the most important aircraft in the

The Wildcat represents the WWII American fighter that took on the Japanese Zero (plane) during the outbreak of the war in the Pacific.  Perhaps the most famous pilot to fly this type of plane was Edward "Butch" O'Hare, who received the Medal of Honor.

The Avenger replaced the aging TBD Devastator torpedo bomber.  This is the type of plane flown by President George H. W. Bush during WWII. This is also the type of plane that was built by Rosie Hickler, "Rosie the Riveter".

The B-25 Mitchell Bomber was a workhorse in Europe and the Pacific for the Allied Forces. Sixteen of these B-25 bombers were used during the Doolittle Raid of Tokyo, Japan.  Training for the Doolittle Raid took place in Columbia, South Carolina.
