What do Abraham Lincoln, "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and Thanksgiving have in common?

Sarah Hale, the author of "Mary Had a Little Lamb", wrote thousands of letters over a 40 year period requesting that the United States celebrate a National Thanksgiving holiday.

President Lincoln, being moved by Hale's persistence, declared that the first official Thanksgiving holiday would be celebrated on November 26, 1863.

Today, we celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November.
